Your Greatest Grooming Fear Could Be Solved by This New Drug

We’ve said time and time again that embracing the bald is a style move we stand behind, but still, most men are a little panicky when it comes to the thought of losing their hair. And even though humans have managed to construct life-saving robots and identify gravitational waves, we still have no clue how to cure the situation, which, according to a drug company trying to crack the code, affects some 35 million men in America alone.

That company, called Samumed, might be getting close, though. Its new drug, a topical solution called SM04554, showed promising results in a study conducted with 300 patients. The results were presented at the American Academy of Dermatology in D.C. earlier this week. In the study, the patients who took the drug saw an increase in hair density and hair count after just over four months of use, while those who were given the placebo just basically lost more hair (poor guys).

We know what you’re thinking: 300 is not a lot of people. That’s why Samumed is working on testing the drug in larger studies in order to vie for eventual FDA clearance. So it might be some time before you can actually use SM04554, but, as Forbes pointed out, considering Rogaine’s 1988 release was one of the last big breakthroughs in topical hair-loss treatments, we’ll take what we can get.
