Zac Efron has been going through something of a metamorphosis since his new movie—a little production called Baywatch—started filming earlier this year. Efron plays rookie lifeguard Matt Brody in the movie and got scary swole for the part. In addition to growing several new muscles and working hard on his tan, he also transformed his grooming situation.

In January of this year, before filming commenced, Efron was the frat-guy-next-door we know and love with completely normal, nothing-to-see-here haircut.

By spring, after most of the movie had been shot, he emerged with light blonde highlights and shaved-off sides. It was definitely a look, but nothing a regular guy couldn’t pull off at the office.

And then this weekend, dude rolls up to Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards with full-on bleached-out, surf-brah mohawk. Baywatch is now in post-production, so this appears to be Efron just being Efron. Or Efron being a mix of Justin Bieber B.D. (before dreads) and Patrick Swayze in Point Break.
