While we’re not above celebrating one of Zayn Malik’s grooming transformations, our hearts just aren’t in this one. Zayn Malik shaved his beard on Friday before heading to various Paris Fashion Week events with his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, and folks are saying he looks “completely different” and “almost unrecognizable.” The thing is, to us, dude looks pretty much exactly the same.

Okay, at the Tom Ford show last month, Malik showed up with way more scruff than usual, so compared to that this is a big change, but that was weeks ago (practically years in Zayn Malik time) and he’s been back to his mildly scruffy self ever since. That he went just a little bit shorter this week feels more like part of the normal life cycle of a beard than a big, considered aesthetic shift. We doubt Malik was trying to steal the spotlight from Niall Horan, and we wouldn’t compare this to when Harry Styles set the Internet on fire by chopping off his scraggly long hair.

Call us if he starts wearing jewelry in that soul patch. That’d be something.
