John Mayer, Makeup Vlogger

John Mayer exists in many different forms: crooning heartthrob musician, Visvim completist, Nike campaign star, watch nerd. But for the moment, our favorite version of Mayer is skincare blogger.

Mayer frequently posts what he calls “hacks” to his Snapchat and Instagram stories. (Insofar as telling guys to cover their whole face in a $215 eye cream can be considered a hack for any normal person.) But what we love about Mayer’s skincare advice isn’t his slightly-out-of-touch product recommendations, it’s the irreverence with which he goes about doling out that advice. After all, his most memorable tip for keeping skin smooth is: “I don’t smoke, and I don’t drink anymore, and I don’t go out in the sun, and I don’t eat, and I don’t love anybody.” Mayer isn't just giving recommendations for how guys can get better-looking skin—he's helping make skincare less embarrassing, or threatening, or emasculating for the everyman. By making grooming weird and funny, it becomes approachable in a way hyper-detailed YouTube tutorials just are not.

Mayer’s most recent foray into the world of skincare takes the form of one of those tutorials, for a “smokey eye,” that he posted as a series of Instagram stories Sunday night. (As any seasoned makeup wearer can tell you, the smokey eye involves smudging eyeshadow to create an effect that looks like smoke.) We’re not going to walk you through Mayer’s entire tutorial—what’s important to know here is that Mayer earnestly applied makeup. (OK, fine. Two important bits to pull out from the multi-slide walkthrough: “Don't forget your eyeball is round,” and you really only need the brushes that come with the eye shadows.)

It’s the sort of weird, funny advice we’ve come to expect from Mayer—the guy who coined acronyms like CNZ (“crucial necessity zones” for applying moisturizer) and DAT (“direct application technique,” or putting moisturizer directly on your face instead of first putting it on your fingers) in recent posts, and suggested headbutting into a facial mist to get the most equal distribution.

Mayer is the most visible signpost that interest in male grooming and makeup is growing. There are plenty of others: Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya wore Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line on the Oscars red carpet, French president Emmanuel Macron spent $30,000 on makeup services in just three months, Ansel Elgort posted a picture of himself in a glitter face mask, David Beckham launched his own skincare line, and the Wall Street Journal recently reported that men are now buying more frequently from brands like Milk Makeup and skincare retailers like Bluemercury.

While actors like Elgort try to distance themselves from any perceived preoccupation with skincare—“[My girlfriend] Violetta put a glitter mask on me lol," he wrote in the caption—Mayer totally goes for it. He doesn’t make a joke out of the fact he’s putting on eyeshadow, and there’s barely any qualification for why he’s putting makeup on himself. Mayer doesn’t seem to take himself so seriously, and enjoys poking fun at the norms of shopping and self-care. Remember when he bought a bunch of sneakers he designed through Nike ID and sold them through his Shopify page? Holding a smokey eye tutorial feels in line with that kind of prank: the YouTube tutorial is so omnipresent that it benefits from Mayer's light ribbing. An even if Mayer is giving a decent lesson, he’s also showing that you can have fun with it, rather than enforcing hyper precision. As long as guys have hang ups about treating their face with any sort of respect, Mayer's nothing-is-embarrassing approach to skincare and makeup is fun to see.

Mayer’s most important advice comes at the very end of his tutorial. With his now-completed smokey eye pressed up to the camera he says, “Oh, I'm sorry, did somebody nail it? No they didn't, but they came close and that's what matters. That's the only thing this was all about, was giving it your all and being glorious.” That’s not just a solid skincare tip—it’s great life advice.
