When you're wearing essentially the same suit as every other guy on the red carpet, you have to make your mark in other ways. Case in point: Jonah Hill's very good hair and beard combo at last night's Screen Actor's Guild awards. Hill showed up with full facial hair and a noticeably high slicked back pompadour. The actor is well known for his sleeper style chops, mastering both formal tailoring and skate style epitomized by his love of London-based Palace Skateboards. And the same can be said for his grooming endeavors, whether he's rocking a summer-length buzzcut, a sleek red carpet do, or even, dare we say, a mustache.

But what made his grooming great last night was the contrast between his beard and hair. Up top was an updated take on Old Hollywood hairstyles and then down below was straight out of the urban woodsman playbook. A pompadour can easily go wrong because it requires a certain amount of height — too much and you'll start channeling Stanley Tucci from The Hunger Games. Hill kept his in the follicular sweet spot thanks to tight sides and matte styling product. Let's hope this is just the start to a great red carpet hair season.
