There’s getting red carpet ready as a woman—spray painting on triceps, attaching weaves and eyelashes, being sewn into a dress—and prepping as a man: putting legs into pant holes, brushing teeth. Or is it a little more complicated than that? We spoke with best supporting actor nominee Michael Fassbender’s pre-show groomer, Anna Bernabe, for the details on the recent GQ cover star’s red carpet regimen.

Total Prep Time: 45 minutes

Hair Styling: Bernabe applied Oribe Foundation Mist and Oribe Volumista Mist for Volume to Fassbender’s damp hair, then blew his locks dry to add volume and enhance his natural waves. She followed with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray on the crown of his head, and sprayed Oribe Superfine Hairspray onto her fingers to create separation and smooth sections in the front of his hair.

Beard Strategy: "Currently Michael is starring in Macbeth and he has grown out a beard for his role. I had to trim underneath his jawline and above his lip for a cleaner red carpet look. I also trimmed a few strays on his brows as well," says Bernabe. The takeaway tip? "I like to rub a small bit of pomade (my favorite is Oribe Original Pomade) on the palms of my hands to control the flyaways on Michael’s beard."

Stay-Awake Secret: "Michael loves listening to music while getting groomed. Usually he likes to play different songs on YouTube. On one occasion we went through an ’80s phase, singing along to songs like Dire Straits’ ’So Far Away.’"
