Yesterday we posed the question: How much beard is too much beard when wearing a suit? Today, we have the answer.
Yesterday, we made a case that your beard should be trimmed up in accordance with your level of tailoring, I.e. Bradley Cooper's Tom Ford suit deserved an expertly groomed beard—and that's what it served up. Today, we have Mel Gibson at the premiere of the movie Hacksaw Ridge, which he directed, sporting a beard that's too big to wear with his suit. Or any suit. Or, at all, actually.
Once your head of hair, sideburns, beard, and mustache become one furry patch that has more in common with a lion's mane than what's acceptable on a civilized man's face, you probably shouldn't keep things growing. As we mentioned in reference to Mr. Cooper yesterday, a beard should accentuate your facial features—not detract from or overwhelm them.
So let this be a lesson when suiting up: your beard should never be longer than the longest setting on your clippers.
