Anyone over the age of thirteen can remember a time when they desperately wanted to stay home from school or sit out a day of work due to a volcanic zit. (This is literally the entire plot of an episode of My So Called Life appropriately entitled "The Zit.") But most people, Angela Chase included, don't let a pimple get in the way of actually getting stuff done. Real Madrid soccer player Marco Asensio, however, sat out of yesterday's Champion's League game because of a pimple on his leg so bad it prevented him from pulling up his sock. How'd the guy end up with such a debilitating leg-zit? By doing something millions of women (and plenty of men) do on a daily basis with minimal injury.
According to French coach Zinédine Zidane, Asensio was left out of the lineup due to an infected ingrown hair caused by shaving his legs. Yeesh. That sounds very painful. And no disrespect to the guy! Everyone has their own journey. But let's be honest: this is not your typical riding-the-pine excuse. Of course, we haven't seen the pimple. It could be giant and angry—medieval even—and the guy needs that leg to kick. But it's hard to feel bad for Asensio knowing that ingrown hairs come with the body-grooming territory, and harder still having known more than one woman who's endured shaving- or waxing-related ingrown hairs so bad they had to take antibiotics—but who still managed to bring their A-games day-in and day-out. Ingrown hairs hurt, and can be frustratingly common, but there are ways to deal with them. Try our Lazy Man's Guide to Body Hair Grooming, or this cheat sheet for keeping ingrown hairs in check.
Our point isn't that Marco Asensio is a baby, or that his coach is enabling him. Only that it must be nice to have one's health issues—even and especially the minor ones—taken so seriously. Here's hoping he recovers quickly.
