Male athletes who took chances with their hair nabbed three of the top spots on Google's list of the most-searched-for celebrity haircuts of 2017—part of its annual Year in Search report. Here’s a look back at those grooming moves and why they demanded so many queries from sports fans and pop-culture followers alike. These might not be the sort of celebrity haircuts you'll want to run home and try, but at least you'll know what's happening in the world of pro-athlete hair, which, yes, is a whole thing.

1. Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin's ever-changing hair is always a topic of conversation every season, especially around these parts. The Brooklyn Nets player has rocked everything from bowl cuts to mini man-buns with confidence. But Lin's hair caught even more attention in October of this year when the 29-year-old tried on dreads, a look that was criticized for cultural appropriation.

Lin wrote a personal essay in defense of the move for The Players' Tribune and personally responded to criticism from retired NBA player Kenyon Martin on social media, stating, "I think as minorities, the more that we appreciate each other’s cultures, the more we influence mainstream society." Stephen Curry also made headlines for his dreaded hair earlier this fall. Fans were divided on whether the hairstyle suited the Golden State Warriors player—fans were also divided on whether it was anyone's damn business what Curry does with his hair. Curry's wife, Ayesha, came to his defense on Twitter, saying, "I love his hair. Super sexy. Super authentic and something he’s always wanted to do…it’s a process and I embrace it whole heartedly." Despite her praise, the 29-year-old went back to his natural hair texture a few weeks later.

9. Javier Báez

Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Báez is a hair chameleon who's always game to try something new with his 'do. He's worn his hair buzzed and platinum blond, in curly Mohawk-meets-mullet fade, and shaved with some edgy lines on the sides. But the braided look the 25-year-old sported in August—a shaved head with a patch of black and blond braids down the back—was a lot more look than usual. The night he debuted the new hairstyle, Báez stole home base like a champ. Bold hair demands bold moves, apparently.
