Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom have a lot more than fast balls in common. The two young phenom pitchers for the New York Mets are both tall (6'6" and 6'4" respectively), they're both better batters than your average starting pitcher, and they both have excellent nicknames (Syndergaard goes by Thor while deGrom has Hair We Go). Oh, and they both have hair god level locks. In fact, their flowing manes are so well known outside of Major League Baseball that both men landed sponsorships with Axe's new hair care division. We caught up with the new faces (or scalps, really) of good hair for a fastball round of question about their follicle journeys, maintenance of those widely-watched locks, and their commitment to keep growing for the fans.

How long did it take you to grow your hair?deGrom: Probably a little over a year. Let's see, I buzzed it when I had Tommy John surgery, and it was long by the time I was pitching again. So about a year.

Syndergaard: Curious what you'd look like with buzzed hair.

deGrom: Like a child.

Syndergaard: Sounds about right. Umm, I really committed to growing my hair out about a year and a half ago. I was still in Vegas, about April or so. There's always this awkward moment when you're growing your hair out and it just doesn't look all that great. But if you just power through it then you'll get a pretty good end result.

How did you wear your hair during that in-between period?Syndergaard: Umm, I don't really know how I coped with it. I just stayed persistent, saw the goal in mind, and stayed with it.

How often do you get a hair cut?deGrom: A couple times a year, not too often. I had it trimmed over the All Star break, and I'll do it again once I get home.

Syndergaard: I probably get it trimmed once every two months or so. I've just been going to the salon in the city, and they'll clean it up a bit.

Is there a Mets clubhouse barber? Does he trim your hair?deGrom: There is. I don't think either of us has ever used him.

Syndergaard: No. I think he's more of a short hair expert.

How often do you wash your hair?deGrom: Umm, a couple times a week. It's not everyday. I don't know if that's gross or not, but...

Syndergaard: Well I've heard that shampooing your hair everyday is bad for the scalp.

deGrom: I've heard that too, so.

Syndergaard: Maybe once every four or five days. Once a rotation basically.

So you get any residual product out by just rinsing?deGrom: Yeah just rinsing. The days that I don't wash my hair with shampoo, then I just rinse it out.

Syndergaard: Same thing.

You'll hear hippie, or get a haircut. I like it. I think it's funny. - deGrom

Do you carry a brush with you?deGrom: I don't.

Syndergaard: Yes, at all times. You don't carry a brush?

deGrom: Nope.

Syndergaard: How the heck do you do it?

deGrom: [combs fingers through his hair]

Syndergaard: Lucky you.

When you're pitching do you wear it up or down?deGrom: I wear it down.

Syndergaard: If I could wear it in a ponytail I would try to find a way to do it. But I don't think that'd be a good look.

Does it get tangled during a game?Syndergaard: It used to until I started using the softening cream.

So you run that through your hair when it's wet?Syndergaard: Yeah, my pre-game routine, I get out of the shower, put a little on my hands, run it through my hair, put it in a bun, let it dry in the bun, and once I'm ready to put my uniform on I take it out of the bun put my hat on and head out to the field.

Would your fans be upset if you weren't wearing it loose during a game?Syndergaard: Probably yeah, cause we see a lot of wigs in the stands. They would like to see the flow.

deGrom: I'd have to agree. They'd be more upset if we cut it off though.

What's the weirdest thing a fan has requested or done in regards to your hair?Syndergaard: Touch it. Ask to touch it.

deGrom: Have they asked to touch it?

Syndergaard: That guy did earlier. I've definitely had someone ask to touch it. That weirded me out a little bit.

deGrom: Saying they want to braid it or something.

Oh really?deGrom: Yeah.

What about opposing team's fans? Do they heckle you?deGrom: Yeah, fans on the opposing side, especially during road games. You'll hear hippie, or get a haircut. I like it. I think it's funny because they think we've never heard that before. So like, good one.

Syndergaard: I wish they'd come up with something more original.

Do women like your hair long or short?

deGrom: My wife probably likes it shorter.

Syndergaard: I think 90% of women that I come into contact with are fans of it.

What's the most annoying thing about having long hair?deGrom: When I'm sleeping, if it gets in my face sometimes it'll wake me up.
