Whatever your personal opinion of the man-bun is, not a soul can deny how popular it has become. It's a constant conversation on the Internet and there are those that swear it has endless powers of attraction. But today, all those theories and all that conjecture can be solidified by some rock-hard data, courtesy of the information-miners at Google.
According to their annual beauty trend report, the number of searches with term "man bun" skyrocketed this year, after nearly ten years of just blips and bloops on their radar. In their own words, it is a "rising star." But of course, the term itself is rather vague and general. To really understand what's going on, you've gotta go a little deeper. In this case, that means examining exactly who people are associating these man buns with and why they're after them.
Google describes a somewhat surprising trend when discussing their findings: "While the popularity of the man bun has been attributed to Jared Leto, we found that Harry Styles is the celeb most associated with the style in search." We've never found Harry Styles's man-bun a particularly shining example of the style, but hey, the people have spoken—or should we say searched. It also would seem that guys flocking to Google for man-bun info are looking specifically for tutorials. "How to do," "how to grow," and "how to tie" are the top three accompanying keywords, which lead to 4.1 million views on YouTube, and that's just across the top five videos. (We've totally got you covered there.)
All in all, the data tells us that no matter how hard you fight against it, or how hard you embrace it, the man-bun isn't going anywhere. You heard it here first: There will be buns.
