My Fitness Routine: Sam Turp Trains During the Day, Works at Night

The bartending life can be a healthier one. Just ask Sam Turp, Montreal bartender by night and boxer-in-training during the day. Turp teamed up with Tequila Cazadores® to make a change for the better: a chance to pursue an active lifestyle while representing his hometown. And through Turp’s participation in the Boxer Bartender Organization, a charitable non-profit exhibitionist sporting organization sponsored exclusively by Cazadores, he had a chance to bring home a championship belt.

Turp trained for 90 days before taking on some of the fiercest boxer-bartender competition out there. Below, he walks us through his routine, and shares a Cazadores cocktail recipe. Hey, can’t train all the time.

Walk us through a typical day. What does your training look like?Six days a week, my day started on an empty stomach. With only coffee in me, around 10:00 AM I would show up first at the gym. After 5-10 minutes of chit-chat with the coach and some of the boxers, I would begin warming up. My workout consisted of: 3 rounds of skip rope, 3 rounds of shadow and technique, 3 rounds of fight simulation shadow, in the ring. I had 1 minute of active rest (abs or footwork) between each round. Then either 3-4 rounds of sparring (fight simulation with protective gear) or 6-7 rounds with a heavy bag. I had a lot of weight to lose, so I would always finish every workout with an intense cardio finisher (stairs or burpees) for 12-15 minutes.

Then lunch, first meal of the day. And off to work for a 12-hour service.

What advice do you have for readers who might be embarking on a similar journey?Trust the process.

Getting in shape, losing weight and learning to box does not happen overnight, but it does start on day one. It’s an amazing opportunity to be guided through such a program. All it truly requires is for you to show up and be disciplined.

Be patient, keep grinding and I promise you, the changes will come. Enjoy yourself, be grateful, make the best of it.
