Whether or not you believe in wearing tank tops in your everyday life—under suits, with nice pants, what have you—it’s hard to deny the appeal of throwing one on for summer workouts. Not only do they basically eliminate pit stains from the equation, but they also lower your chances of passing out due to heatstroke. Both good things. On Friday, while grabbing a smoothie at L.A.’s favorite overpriced health-food store, Erewhon, Jonah Hill proved that the practical gym tank can also look damn good.
Hill did a couple of things right here. For one, this wasn’t a showoff tank top (only Beckham can get away with those) but one in a sober, solid color with a high-cut neck and armholes and a not-too-long length. For another, he styled it with just enough character. His nondescript black gym shorts were equally practical—and fit well. A chain necklace, half-calf black socks, and Vans Sk8-Hi sneakers, meanwhile, gave the look an L.A.-kid spin. If those add-ons don’t come naturally to you, there’s no need to force it. The point here is to take a couple of strong basics, then add a dope pair of sneakers or a gym-friendly accessory to the equation to crank up the style a little bit. A pair of especially stylish sunglasses or a better-than-average duffel bag would even be fine.
Of course, pulling off a tank top at the gym is also easier if you’ve been going there regularly and have the biceps to prove it. Hill’s been putting in the time; we know that much. Follow his lead and save sleeveless shirts for when you’re fully in summer beast mode.
