The GQ Memorial Day Grooming Guide

Memorial Day is summer’s opening salvo after what feels like an eternity of transitional weather. It’s also a full day off devoted entirely to hanging out and enjoying the sun in whatever way you see fit—whether that’s by baking at the beach, getting your barbecue on, or couch surfing while you binge watch those Narcos episodes you never finished. Regardless of the scenario, though, you’re going to want to look your best (yes, even as a shut-in), and that means paying a little attention to what’s going on with your skin and hair. And so, here are four easy steps to help ensure your Memorial Day weekend remains as handsome as possible.

1. You’re Only as Good as Your Tools

Whatever your plans are this weekend, we understand that grooming isn't the first thing on your mind. It’s why we’ve narrowed down your list of necessary products to the following three essentials; have these on hand, and you’ve got a solid shot at making it out of the weekend with your hide intact.

Let’s start off with the obvious: We’re talking about sunscreen. As we’ve told you nearly a million times now (we counted), SPF is the only thing standing between you and a whole spectrum of skin-related maladies, starting with seemingly innocuous sunburn and ending with big, scary words like cancer. So no matter your skin type—and shade, as, contrary to popular thought, darker skin can get burned and permanently damaged by the sun, too—be sure to slather some on before, and periodically throughout, your day in the sun.

Next on your list: face wipes, like these by Ursa Major. Individually packed so you can simply shove a few into whatever bag you’re bringing to the day’s events, they’re perfect for keeping breakouts at bay by wiping away grease after a long day in the sun.

Last but not least, you’re going to want to bring along some deodorant, preferably of the herbal variety. Because the last thing you want is for sweat to get the best of you.

2. Give Your Hair a Day Off, Too

Fact: Memorial Day is all about chilling out. Which is why, instead of opting for a hairstyle that requires constant attention, you should go for something more toward the messy end of the spectrum. That way, no matter how out of hand the day gets, your already messed-up ’do will look perfectly intentional. You’ve been meaning to give non-hairspray hairspray a shot, right? Well, this is your chance.

3. Travel with the Essentials

If you’re one of the lucky few who’s decided to get out of dodge for the long weekend, then congrats! You’re smarter than the rest of us. The trouble is that traveling can take a lot out of you, and a three-day trip doesn’t afford a ton of time to recover. So it’s imperative you bring along the necessary grooming accoutrements to get your face back into tip-top shape as quickly as possible. First and foremost: eye cream. Because nothing screams, “I took a red-eye Friday night” louder than, well, your eyes. Recipe for Men makes one great lightweight option, formulated with caffeine to perk up tired skin right quick. Other than that, a simple travel grooming kit, like this one by Malin + Goetz, will do—just in case the stuff the hotel provides isn’t up to snuff.

4. Never Stop Hydrating

Chances are that at some point over the three-day weekend, you’re going to end up day-drinking, probably somewhere outdoors. And while we’re totally in support of that, it does pose a particular challenge to staying hydrated. You see, alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes your body lose water faster than usual. Couple that with the water you’re already expelling via sweat on a hot, sunny day, and you can see how dehydration might be a problem. Now, you’re probably asking yourself, “What does this have to do with grooming?” The answer is a lot, actually, since one of the first places dehydration shows is on your face, drying out skin and dulling your complexion. So make sure to keep drinking water as the day goes on.

Side benefit: It’ll also help with your Tuesday morning hangover.
