Actor Ben McKenzie looked super sharp at a Gotham event on Wednesday in a navy suit with a bit of sheen to it and a burgundy knit tie. But up north, something odd was happening with his hair. Specifically, it was the former O.C. star's asymmetrical side part. This is great for guys with thick and/or curly hair like Justin Timberlake, as it discreetly distributes some of the weight in your hair.

But Ben McKenzie doesn’t appear to have incredibly thick hair (good hair, yes, just not crazy dense hair), and his diagonal part is really more like a middle part that wants to be a side part when it should be the opposite. So what’s going on here? Maybe McKenzie has a tricky cowlick that he had to work around. Or maybe he just lost control of the thing, like that guy who waxes his mustache just a little bit more carefully every day until he starts to resemble a Civil War reenactor.

To be clear, a not-too-perfect side part can be a good idea—if you don’t want that straight-from-the-barbershop look. To achieve this, you can part your hair with your hands while it’s damp, so you don’t get a perfectly straight line, or, you can use a comb, steering the part diagonally back towards the crown. But if you find yourself starting your part on the left side of your head and ending your part on the right side of your head, wet your head and start over.
