Jaden Smith is a style maverick who plays by his own rules (and those rules, we assume, come from another dimension). He's pushed the boundaries of conventional menswear with leopard tights, Cartier rings as hair ties, and overalls. This is the guy who wore an all-white Batman suit to his prom.We love his trailblazing spirit, even when we don't love his fit. But changes are happening in the land of Jaden.
A few weeks ago he debuted a brand new cropped haircut, ditching his once-glorious dreadlocks. Even if the move was for a movie role, we think the new 'do makes Jaden a little more grown up. But it looks like the rapper/actor/Mystery School founding member hasn't quite parted ways with his old hair. As in, he still has his old hair. And Smith showed up to the 2017 Met Gala with it in his hands. The look is—pauses for comedic effect—a handful to say the least.
Instead of some outrageous headwear or sunglasses (he did however sport some diamond grills for an extra dose of panache), Smith decided the best way to accessorize his all-black-everything Louis Vuitton look (womenswear, of course) was literally with his old hair in tow. While we won't recommend you following suit at the next wedding you have coming up (a pile of buzzed hair is not an acceptable replacement for a pocket square), you have to give it to Jaden for redefining what we thought a haircut could be.
Of course, this follicle move raises important questions: What happens to the hair once he's inside the Met Gala? Who has to hold it when the first course comes? And is this a one-time swerve or are we about to see Jaden's locks replace a box of water as his go-to accessory?

Neilson BarnardWhether you love it, hate it, or are kind of creeped out by it, you have to hand it to Smith for being one of the most exciting guys to look for on any red carpet, even on one of fashion's most out-there style nights. He also did what we thought was impossible: he out-Jaden-ed himself.
