Rule number one when it comes to bad breath: Always assume you have it. "Halitosis is caused by bacteria," explains dentist Maryann Lehmann. "It can be anywhere in your mouth—on your tongue, teeth, even under the gum line." Time to go on the offensive.

Stock your desk drawer with a few packs of Colgate Wisps ($2 for four), which you can use to scrub your teeth and tongue in the privacy of your office, no sink necessary. If you'd rather chew gum, look for one with bacteria-busting Xylitol, like Trident Xtra Care.

But the biggest favor you can do for everyone that you talk to: Drink a hell of a lot more water. "Moist mouths collect less bacteria," says Lehmann. Lesson learned: Chug more, stink less.
