Austin bartender Greg Mayer was all about the late night lifestyle when Tequila Cazadores® brought the Bartender Boxing Organization to town. Ninety days later, this now-former smoker is in serious shape—and he’s pretty optimistic about his future.
Below, he shares his fitness routine—and a Tequila Cazadores cocktail. Here’s to choosing a healthier lifestyle!
What drew you to the Bartender Boxing program? When I heard Tequila Cazadores was bringing the Bartender Boxing Organization to Austin, I was honestly just in pretty bad shape. I was drinking too much and smoking. Wasn’t really happy with my lifestyle at the current time. So what drew me to Bartender Boxing was the desire to just all around better myself. I had tried just working out, but I kept making excuses to stop. I was hoping this would keep me going and it did.
What was your favorite part of training? My absolute favorite part of training was the mitt work. “Mitts” is when you are one-on-one with a coach, and he is calling a series of numbers which translate into a series of punches, and you are just continuously throwing them. It’s honestly one of the hardest parts of training. I don’t think people realize how much it takes to keep throwing punches for like 3-5 minutes straight. It’s intense. And we had an incredible mitts coach, who just gets you all fired up. Everything about it is awesome. The intensity, the ferocity. It makes you think quickly as well, which you need to do in the ring.
Ultimately, what did you get out of participating in the program? What did boxing reveal to you about yourself?Bartender Boxing helped me change my life. In so many ways. After 10 years, I quit smoking, haven’t touched a cigarette since the day of the tryout. It also gave me confidence in my day-to-day life. I believe in myself much more and am confident in my abilities, in all aspects of my life and career. I’m no longer worried about taking chances. I found that I could push my body to limits I did not even think of, and I decided to throw away those limits I had placed on myself. I am just all around happier. It honestly helped me a better person, and I can’t thank Tequila Cazadores, everyone behind the Bartender Boxing Organization program, and my coaches and trainers enough.
