What to Do With Your Clothes After Losing Weight (or Making Gains, Bro)

If you're reading this, then you might be deserving of a big-time pat on the back. You hit the gym hard, skipped those sweets, drank all that vegetable garbage you read was good for you, and now have a new, kickass physique you can't wait to rub in everyone's face. The only thing is, whether you shed pounds or, in the words of Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney, "tacked on mass," your clothes are going to fit differently than they did all those weeks ago. Hell, maybe they won't fit at all. But does this mean tossing out your entire wardrobe and starting from scratch? Not necessarily. Here are a few tips that will get you looking comfortable in your new skin.

Update Your EssentialsIf you've finally hit your goal weight or gotten ripped, your impulse is going to be to draw attention to yourself with bold, adventurous clothing. Just don't confuse bold and adventurous for stuff you're going to hate wearing in two weeks. Instead, switch out your old jeans, T-shirts, and navy-blue suit for ones that fit you like a glove.

Recalibrate Your SizesYou want your new, better-fitting clothing to do just that—actually fit. Often people who go up or down in size get overzealous in flaunting their new body and end up wearing suffocatingly tight clothes. That's no good. You may have lost a few inches on your waist, but does that really mean you went from a 44 Regular to a 36 Short? Probably not.

Gauge Your CommitmentWas your transformation a temporary thing, or are you truly dedicated to a long life of healthy eating and iron-pushing? If you're unsure, don't go swiping that credit card like a madman quite yet. Luckily, in 2015, stores like Uniqlo can let you buy a few pieces in your new sizes without the anxiety of needing them to fit from now until the rest of time. (Especially with that new Lemaire collaboration on the way.)

...But Splurge on One Awesome, Motivational ThingHave you always wanted $500 rocker jeans or a $2,000 leather jacket? Go ahead. Buy them. Investing in something you love and want to wear all the time will keep you hitting the gym, and keep your new favorite piece of clothing looking on point.

Sacrifice What Doesn't Fit, No Matter How Much It HurtsYou got in shape because you wanted to feel and look different, so if your favorite jeans or sweater simply doesn't fit anymore, see it as the positive it is. Honestly, don't even spend the time or money trying to re-tailor things. It's time for a new start, a new you, and yes, even some new gear. (P.S.: Be sure to donate your ill-fitting items, because you're not just ripped, you're also a nice person.)
