With all the talk of buzz cuts around here, you might think it was the only haircut even worth considering this season. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong—trimming your locks back below the inch mark will allow your scalp to cool down way better than it would under a full head of hair, a fact you’ll certainly appreciate as the temperatures continue to make their way toward boiling.
But the truth is that there is more than one way to beat the summer heat when it comes to choosing a ’do. All you need is a barber who knows a thing or two about how to snip a proper fade. Not sure what we’re talking about? Then check out Dominic Cooper, who stepped out Monday night at the Hollywood premiere of his new movie, Warcraft, sporting the season’s other coolest haircut.
Notice the respectable amount of length at the top of his head, giving way to a buzzer-shorn gradient at the sides and back and finishing at skin level around the sideburns and neckline. That’s called a “skin fade,” and for guys who aren’t so sure about taking a clipper to the bulk of their mane, it can be the perfect middle ground, providing all the temperature benefits of a buzz cut without the requisite commitment.
Now, you might be wondering: What’s the difference between that and an undercut? Well, the distinction has to do with that gradient we mentioned. While an undercut puts a hard edge between the length up top and the buzz below, a skin fade transitions gently down from the crown. The result: an office-appropriate yet still on-trend chop, without the potential for pitfalls like the undercut tail.
Sounds like a no-brainer, really.
