It didn’t get much classier last night than Sarah Silverman pulling out her vape pen—unless you want to talk the influx of vintage slickback styles that graced the red carpet. Most of the clean-cut dudes went for a more modern take on the look, opting for little to no side part and keeping the sides tight. The good news for the rest of us: "This look works well no matter no matter what state your haircut is in, it’s easy to achieve, and always adds instant polish," says stylist Garrett Bryant of De Berardinis Salon in NYC. Here are two ways to get it done.

Two Minutes to Shine:

Look for a product that has strong hold but is soft to the touch so it doesn’t get crunchy or flakey as it dries, says Bryant. (He likes Shu Uemura’s Kengo Feather cream.) Squeeze out a quarter-sized drop and emulsify it in your hands (sort of like putting on hand lotion) and run hands throughout wet hair, slicking it back. You can use a comb to smooth things out but make sure to run hands through hair afterwards to avoid comb lines. Let air-dry.

Upgrade to the 15 Minute Routine (Blow Dryer Involved) from Jon Hamm’s Stylist Diana Schmidtke:

"I applied American Crew’s Alternator spray to Jon’s wet hair, and then used a blow dryer and my fingers to smooth the sides and back of hair. On top, I used a medium round brush to pull the hair away from his face while blowing it dry to create a little extra volume and shine. I finished by applying American Crew Firm Hold Styling Gel throughout."
