When it comes to catching passes and showing off pregame, DeAndre Hopkins needs no guidance. But the key to success is knowing when to seek out advice from others, which is why Hopkins turned to Pharrell when it came to his skin-care routine. The best tip he gathered? “Pharrell exfoliates daily,” he says on this episode of Grooming Gods. “That’s the secret. He said he got it from a supermodel. If Pharrell is saying he exfoliates daily, I have to exfoliate daily.”
But grooming isn’t just about finding the right advice—it can be personal, like how Hopkins dedicates some time to treating his natural locs with jojoba oil every day. “Having locs is a significant part of who I am,” Hopkins says. “A workplace can discriminate against someone with locs, which makes me angry because if you know the history, this is the way hair was back in the day. Having natural hair is something I take pride in, especially in this day and age. It represents strength. I know my ancestors would be proud of me for still having something that’s natural to my culture.”

Brush in Circles.“Don’t ever just go side-to-side,” Hopkins warns. “It also massages the gums if you brush in circles. Did y’all know that?”

Exfoliate. After a splash of warm water, Hopkins likes to use his knuckles in more circular motions to really get this sea kelp and French clay scrub sloughing off all the excess. He chases it with cold water, “to close up the pores.”

Treat your hair to some of that moisture, too.“You know what time it is: the jojoba oil.” Hopkins recommends massaging it into the scalp, working for at least 20 seconds in each spot. But really, it’ll help you anywhere you put it, because, as Hopkins says, “You can’t go wrong with jojoba oil.”
