Beauty Tested, Beast Approved is a grooming blog for normal guys. My wife, Amy (the beauty director of Allure magazine) has tried thousands of products over the years—mostly on herself, but often on the human guinea pig who sleeps next to her. Here are some of my picks, and for all Beast Approved entries, head here.
The best part about being married to a beauty editor? Being exposed to products I never would have bought on my own—either because they are way out of my price range, too emasculating to bring to the checkout counter, or not marketed directly to me. Today’s pick falls in the latter category: a baby cream that happens to be one kick-ass hand lotion.
About two weeks ago my skin started making the seasonal turn from oily and shiny to dry and crusty. Caught off guard by the sudden change of crappiness, I asked Amy if she had any hand lotion I could borrow. Her recommendation, Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream ($6.99 at drugstore.com), surprised me. The word "hand" appears nowhere on the packaging—not to mention it’s clearly meant for infants—but apparently babies with eczema and I look for the same things in a lotion. And those things are:
Efficacy: No wonder babies like this stuff—it soothes instantly. One squeeze after my morning shower is enough to keep my skin moisturized and itch-free for an entire day. I don’t even have to reapply after washing my hands.
Smell: Or really, a lack thereof. If I want my skin to smell, I wear cologne—any additional scents only muddle the message. This is completely fragrance-free.
Feel: Greasiness is my biggest pet peeve with hand lotion. I hate feeling like I need to towel off after an application. This lotion absorbs easily into your skin with very little rubbing.
Value: During the cold months, I use hand cream every day, so I burn through it pretty quickly. I appreciate a reasonably priced product, and at $6.99 a tube, this fits the bill.
