Many resolutioners aim to start the year off with a clean slate by swearing off alcohol. And for all who celebrate Dry January, the best non-alcoholic drinks can be a major assist in staying totally sober, but still enjoying a cold bevvie that tastes like the real deal. Ever since the mocktail movement has taken off in the past couple years, many bars have been cooking up flavorful non-alcoholic cocktails for their drink lists beyond just sodas and seltzers. Meanwhile, other D2C brands have emerged with beverages that pack complex flavors into a tight 0% proof (or just slightly alcoholic at less than 1% ABV) recipe. At happy hour time, there are a slew of non-alcoholic spirits you can shake up with juices and sodas or opt for a beer alternative that tastes just like the real thing. So, whether you’re foregoing booze this month only or you're sober-curious for the longer haul, we’ve got all the best non-alcoholic drinks you'll want to keep on hand.
Jump To: Non-Alcoholic Beers | Non-Alocholic Wines | Non-Alcoholic Spirits | Non-Alcoholic CocktailsHow are non-alcoholic beverages made? When you're talking non-alcoholic beers, you're going to be drinking a beverage that has been typically brewed with the standard ingredients (water, hops, yeast, and grain) to maintain a hoppy taste, then put through a dealcoholization process. So rather than drinking a copycat beverage that's flavored to taste like a lager, you're still enjoying a beer the way it was meant to be brewed, just stripped of the majority of its alcohol content through some kind of fermentation or dilution process. Non-alcoholic wine takes a similar tack: It goes through the same vinification process as a standard wine, then usually gets vacuum distilled to siphon off the alcohol at the end. Similarly, many zero-proof spirits are distilled with familiar flavors, but undergo many more rounds of distillation than usual to strip them of their alcohol content. In all of these cases, you're getting similar flavor profiles and finishes due to the way these beverages were fermented, distilled, and brewed, except with trace amounts or zero percent alcohol left over.
There are also certain NA drinks where brands have chosen ingredients to mimic the taste of a cocktail, or spices and flavors that will pair well in mixed drinks, but are never officially distilled with alcohol to begin with.
Why should you drink non-alcoholic beverages?Everyone has their reasons for avoiding alcohol. Some people cut back for their health or family ties to alcoholism. Others pass because of the taste or if they don't handle their liquor well. Even regular drinkers take periodic breaks to reconnect with their body and mind. Of course, if you sense that your cravings for alcohol are more than just a social urge, you might need more than just an enticing NA spritzer to completely quit alcohol cold-turkey.
But when you just want to mix things up and cut back, it's worth looking into non-alcoholic alternatives to beer, wine, and liquor that can help you recreate the flavors of your favorite vice—minus the dreaded hangover or the late-night Uber home. There are more flavorful NA drink options out there than ever, but what's actually worth cracking open after a long day? Read on for some of our favorite non-alcoholic beverages in the beer, wine, cocktail, and spirits categories.

What to try: Athletic Lite, Upside Dawn, Custom Variety CaseHow to drink: Crack one open and drink just like a beer: from the can or poured into a chilled glass
Athletic Brewing is the current leader in making NA beer in American craft styles like IPAs. The company’s operations are entirely dedicated to non-alcoholic options, so it has a lot more flavors and style options than a regular brewery that dabbles in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic brews. Your options include golden ales, IPAs, stouts, lagers, what ales, and even a line of sparkling waters. One of our favorites is Athletic Lite, which tastes as close to a real light beer (think Miller Lite, Bud Lite… you get the picture) as you can without having any actual booze. Plus, Athletic Brewing offers monthly subscriptions, or you can order by the six pack to fully stock your NA fridge.

Visitor is brand new on the NA beer scene, offering up a crisp take on an extremely low ABV (less than .5%) beer. This one's gluten-reduced, if that's something you're worried about, with a light profile. And if, like us, you find yourself drinking a lot of these, cases ship for free.

What to try: Special Effects Hoppy Amber, Special Effects IPAHow to drink: Drink like a normal beer—straight from the can or into a pint glass
If New York City had an official beer, it'd be Brooklyn Brewery's Brooklyn Lager. Amid its eclectic assortment, the brewery has been pumping out a regular assortment of NA brews that drink just like the regular stuff. Its pilsner is clean and crisp, and for the IPA lover, the grapefruit IPA has a nice citrusy bitterness that pairs well with the brew's green hop flavor.

Most PopularStudio Null is a collection of high-quality, non-alcoholic wines from European vineyards. Its selection includes reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines for all kinds of palates. Melbourne-based NON has recently entered the US market, and Americans can finally get their hands on a bottle of these exceptional wine alternatives. Like Proxies, NON does not make dealcoholized wine. Instead, these are chef- and sommelier-approved blends of seasonal produce, cooked in various ways to elicit the types of flavors you'd expect from a glass of wine. The fun and bold flavors aren't too different from what you'd find in a bottle of natural wine, and these offerings make wonderful complements to all meals and sober days and nights.

French Bloom
Le Blanc Alcohol-Free Organic Sparkling Wine$41French Bloom
What to try: Le Rosé, Le Blanc How to drink: As an alternative to Champagne or paired with salty foods and cured meats
Popping bottles doesn't need to mean you whip out the vintage Dom. French Bloom's sparkling wines are made from de-alcoholized chardonnay and pinot noir. That means they're dry and flavorful just like the real deal, and because they're made from actual grapes, it helps to replicate the actual flavors produced in wine. Use this as a stand-in for when you want some bubbly for a celebration, or enjoy it as a pre-dinner aperitif to whet the appetite.

Töst
All-Natural Alcohol Free Sparkling Beverage$31Amazon
What to try: Le Rosé, Le Blanc How to drink: Pour a glass and enjoy as you would any sparkling wine
One way to help curb the craving for booze is by supplementing your typical drink with something carbonated. Sparkling wine alternatives, like Töst, might offer more satisfaction than drinking a de-alcoholized wine because of the sensation of the bubbles. These “wines” are made with a white tea base, and flavored with ginger and elderberry for the rosé or white cranberry and ginger if you're trying the brand's flagship bottle. The rosé is on the drier side, while the original offers a sweeter, fruitier flavor like a fancier version of Martinelli's.

Garden 108$29Amazon
What to try: Garden 108, Spice 94, Grove 42How to drink: Craft a classic cocktail suggested by Seedlip or mix up one of your own
Seedlip makes non-alcoholic liquors that are flavorful and sugar-free. Currently there are three flavor profiles: Garden 108 (with pea, hay, spearmint, rosemary, and thyme flavors); Spice 94 (flavored with all spice, bark, citrus, berries, cardamom, lemon and grapefruit peel, and oak); and Grove 42 (made from a blend of three types of orange, lemongrass, and ginger). Seedlip Garden is one of our favorites for its vegetal flavor, though you’re sure to find a bottle that suits your tastes. The NA liquors are perfect for mixing into classic cocktails (or, mocktails), including an espresso martini, toddy, and apple highball.

Ghia
Le Spritz (20-pack)$60Ghia
What to try: Aperitif, Le Spritz, First Sip KitHow to drink: Mix Ghia with a bubbly mixer (equal parts) or pop open a can of Le Spritz for a ready-made mixture
Most PopularGhia is a spirits-free apéritif for these modern times that's flavorful enough to sip on its own or stir up into a mixed drink. It's made of plants and botanicals that possess “potent” and “heady” flavors—like you've combined citrus fruits (peel and all), leaving you with a pleasant sweetness that's tempered by some bitterness, too. Ghia has even expanded its line of Mediterranean-inspired apéritifs with three ready-to-drink cocktails, or canned spritzes—Ghia Ginger, Ghia Soda, and Ghia Lime and Salt—that riff on the OG recipe.

Mezcal$50 $42Verishop
What to try: Whiskey, Gin, or MezcalHow to drink: Create your go-to recipes or try something new like a Mezcal Mule or The Fitz
Monday is an award-winning zero-proof liquor maker that offers a non-alcoholic whiskey, gin, and mezcal that are made in small batches in California with botanical ingredients. It's a little vague on how exactly these are produced, so it's unclear whether these are de-alcoholized distillations or not. Either way, the taste profiles are still on point for blending into your favorite cocktails or sipping neat, and there's even a Monday Trio if you want to try all three at once.

Optimist Botanicals
Fresh Non-Alcoholic Spirit$35Optimist Botanicals
What to try: Smokey, Fresh, BrightHow to drink: Create your go-to recipes or simply enjoy with a club soda for a quick highball
Like Monday, Optimist Botanicals uses botanicals to replicate spirits like gin, mezcal, and the like when you're stirring up zero-proof cocktails. The brand names its spirits after its main flavor profile (so Fresh for gin and Bright for vodka), and does so as a way to help you orient your mocktails around what flavor profiles you want to build off of rather than the liquor you want to replicate. One of our favorites is Smokey, the mezcal substitute, which uses Lapsang souchong, a smoked black tea, as the base, accented by sweet-and-spicy ginger and grassy oregano.

De Soi
Golden Hour (4-pack)$25De Soi
What to try: Purple LuneHow to drink: Try the Peachy Keen mocktail: pour Purple Lune into a glass and add a peach slice and blackberry for added depth and a fruity finish
Katy Perry's first drink venture De Soi is all about non-alcoholic aperitifs spiked with adaptogens, supposedly to help you relax and unwind with one of its bevvies. While we're not so keen to espouse any health benefits here, we do think De Soi’s drinks are fun and flavorful, from the citrusy Golden Hour to the sweet cherry- and vanilla-tinged Purple Lune to the mushroom-enhanced Champignon Dream. They're especially refreshing on a hot summer day, and you can sample them all in the De Soi Variety Pack.

Wilderton Spirits makes bold non-alcoholic spirits with rich and dimensional tastes like the citrusy Lustre, sultry Earthen, and the Bittersweet Aperitivo. They're somewhat syrupy and have tea-like flavors that are aptly earthy and bitter. You can drink each spirit on the rocks, try a Cosmo Not or Wild Rose Spritz from the Wilderton Spirits catalog, or mix up a simple spirit and tonic.

Figlia
Fiore Frizzante (4-pack)$24Boisson
What to try: Fiore FrizzanteHow to drink: Poured over ice with an orange peel to garnish
Most PopularAnother one of our favorite cocktail-ready drinks is Figlia, a pre-dinner beverage with a “floral, bitter, aromatic” flavor profile that the brand likens to a “zero-proof Campari.” The original, with its notes of rose, orange, and cloves, has a warm, spicy profile that's perfect for cold weather drinks, and delicious enough to enjoy on its own or mixed up with simple syrups and other aromatics. A fizzy canned version of the Fiore also recently joined the Figlia family, that's ideal for cracking open when the weather's nice out.
Martini & RossiMartini & Rossi
Non-Alcoholic Vibrante$20Boisson
Martini & Rossi
Non-Alcoholic Floreale$20Boisson
What to try: Vibrante, FlorealeHow to drink: Mixed like you would your typical aperitif
You'll recognize Martini & Rossi for its vermouth, which seems to have secured a permanent spot on just about every well-stocked bar cart. Its non-alcoholic aperitivos are made almost exactly the same way as the “regular” stuff in which wine (now de-alcoholized) is infused with botanicals to create something worth mixing. Vibrante has the bitter-sweet flavors of bergamot, while Floreale has a more delicate, floral flavor profile. Both of these pair well with fruit juices and make a great summer spritz.

Recess
Grapefruit "Paloma" (12-Pack)$45Recess
What to try: Zero-proof margaritaHow to drink: Pour into a glass that has a salt or sugar rim (or straight from the can)
Recess is known for its CBD-infused sparkling drinks that mix well into mocktails (or hold their own alone) for an afternoon pick-me-up. Recess’ newest launch is a zero-proof margarita, a sparkling NA version made even zestier with lime, agave, lemon, and orange. It offers a refreshing and light margarita-like flavor without the alcohol or hangover—and also none of the mixing required.

St. Agrestis
Amaro Falso (4-Pack)$20 $18Boisson
What to try: Phony NegroniHow to drink: Pour into a glass over a large rock with a slice of lemon peel, or straight from the can/bottle.
St. Agrestis is a Brooklyn-based distillery that's well-known for its ready-to-drink cocktails, which have given them an edge in the NA game. Its Phony Negroni is probably the brand's most famous, as it tastes almost identical to a full-booze negroni with the same juniper-forward flavor and bittersweet Campari-like notes. The only exception is an added touch of carbonation, which the distillery likens to “[mimicking] the bite that alcohol typically provides.”

Curious Elixirs
No. 6 Booze-Free Painkiller (4-Pack)$40Curious Elixirs
What to try: No.2 Spicy-Stormy Pineapple Margarita, No.6 Dark and StormyHow to drink: Drink straight from the bottle or pour into the glassware you'd typically drink the cocktail in
While lots of brands offer non-alcoholic spirits to help you mix up a cocktail—which to some is most of the fun when it comes to consuming real booze—Curious Elixirs takes the guesswork and handiwork out of enjoying a cocktail. Each bottle of theirs comes pre-mixed with flavors and spices, like its island-ready NA painkiller or its spicy “margarita” mix that tastes like a fruit juice blend with a kick. The numbering system might be hard to understand, but each concoction mimics an existing cocktail (like a spritz or old fashioned), so once you find your go-to, don't forget the number.
