Is taking an hour out of some Sunday night, when you'd much rather be watching Game of Thrones, easy? No. But in your hectic last-day-of-the-weekend grind of watching back-to-back football games, bingeing on Netflix shows, hitting the gym, and dealing with a hangover because you hit your local watering hole the night before, we're going to suggest you give up a small fraction of time to an activity that will get you primed for the week ahead: the Sunday Night Power Shower™. All we're asking for is an hour and trust us, it's worth it.
You can call it whatever you want (if Power Shower™ is too much, try "weekly reset" or tell your family to "just leave me alone for an hour"), but setting sixty minutes aside once a week to do a bunch of necessary weird and gnarly things to your body will yield a tremendous payoff when it comes to your physical and mental wellbeing. Not only will it set your mind in gear for what's about to hit you Monday morning, it will also put you on a path of grooming excellence for the seven days ahead (before you hit reset once more). Here's what to do during your "me time" hour:
Do Your WarmupsIf you're going to take the time, make every minute count. (Also: don't feel guilty about running the water a little longer than you would during your normal rushed morning wash-off—unless you live in drought-affected California!). Tell everyone to leave you alone, turn on some music if you like, or a podcast, whatever makes you feel relaxed, close the bathroom door, and let the bathroom get nice and steamy. Here's why: Steam helps open the pores, both for your skin and hair (yes, your hair has pore-like openings called cuticles).
Fix Your FaceDid you know you're not supposed to exfoliate your skin every day? Instead, you should only be doing it one-to-two times a week. But you're not tracking that sort of crap—no one is (who the hell has the time?). Instead, just do it on Sunday night and be done with it until next week. And because you're only doing it once a week, feel free to use a fancier brand, it'll last longer.
And while you're at it, be the type of guy who likes to indulge in a face mask from time to time. Masks help repair your skin on a deeper level as opposed to just cleaning it on a superficial one, and when you have the time to slather one on, you should. (We like this one from Dermalogica)
You read GQ, so naturally, it isn't news to you that you shouldn't wash your hair everyday. You're only supposed to do it two to three times a week and make sure that Sunday night is one of them. You should go with a good shampooing and a deep condition. And, if you're feeling really fancy, you can even use a hair mask, like this one from Moroccanoil, which basically replenishes all the protein and moisture that is stripped away from your hair from daily care and upkeep.
Give Yourself a Proper ShaveMost of the time when your shaving, you're in a rush, just trying get the hair off your face and then out the door. But on Sunday, give yourself a good, long, detailed shave so you head into the week with a nice clean face. Our suggestion is to do it in the shower, after the steam has opened all your pores up. Bring in some shaving cream, your razor and a fog-free mirror and go to town.
And speaking of depilation, if you have gnarly nose hairs or errant wisps of hair on your face, now would be a good time to get rid of them. These little touch-up razors (which somehow magically get rid of hair but don't cut your skin) are the perfect thing. Think of it like detailing your car.
If you clip your nails whenever you notice they're too long, try committing to cutting them every Sunday during your new routine. And do it after your shower, when nails are softer and more pliable and also less likely to fly all over the place (thanks for the tip, Reddit).
Cool DownWe've suggested two things in the course of this power shower—a face and hair mask—that requires you to kind of chill for 10 minutes or so while everything settles in and works its magic, but what are you going to do while killing said time? Stretch. You're already in the hot steamy shower where not only your pores are open but your muscles are looser and more pliable, so take this opportunity to take a few deep breaths and bend at the waist and let your gravity take your torso down as far as it can go. If you ever have any aches or pains, a good stretch can help, and if you're doing any sort of resistance training, stretching helps loosen your muscles out, and lets you take it to the next level when you do, indeed, train.
And don't just do your classic bend-at-the-waist stretch either, now's a great time to roll out that neck and shoulders, pull your knee into your chest, work out any tension you have in your groin ... the only limits you have are the size of your shower stall. And if you've never stretched before this is a great series of videos to help give you some ideas ... and this one and this one. We promise you'll feel amazing once you step out.
