Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. This month it's all about business casual, and today we're revisiting an office classic that's feeling new all over again.
When everyone is wearing the same sort of thing, it can create an impulse to go in the opposite direction. Take that one guy at Facebook who wears custom-made suits, for instance, or A$AP Rocky, the rapper who dresses a lot like 82-year-old Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld. This phenomenon might be the reason why we’ve been keen on check blazers lately. In our souvenir jacket-obsessed times, they suddenly feel fresh again. Plus, while they’re just as self-assured as a satin bomber, they’re a lot more appropriate for work—that always counts for something.
Like any trendy statement jacket the check blazer takes a bit of know-how to pull off. For starters, while you should feel free to go bold with the pattern, it’s got to fit you like a glove. A too-big plaid jacket is a friend to no one. Secondly, try wearing it with pristine white sneakers. It’ll take a bit of the Don Draper out of the jacket and give it a bit of a LeBron James spin. Think: sportier, more modern, and with a better sense of humor too.
Go on, get yourself one—before the guy who sits next to you does.
